Federal and state Solar Incentives
The Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is one of the most important mechanisms to support the growth of solar energy in the United States. Since the ITC was enacted in 2006, the U.S. solar industry has grown by more than 10,000% - creating hundreds of thousands of jobs and investing billions of dollars in the U.S. economy in the process according to the SEIA. In 2020, SEIA successfully advocated and obtained a two-year delay of the 26% ITC credit that was supposed to end in 2019. The 26% ITC is now available through 2022.
Many states offer incentives and rebates as well when you convert to solar power. Similar to the Solar ITC but they are state tax credits for ownership of a solar system. Others apply to lease and PPA customers. Depending on where you live, you could be eligible for solar renewable energy credits, performance based incentives as well as net metering incentives.
